The Booze – At Maximum Volume
I can barely wipe the grin off my face from when the first song started playing. This is no ordinary Rock band. This is The Rolling Stones, The Kinks, Faces, throw in The Black Keys for good measure–and roll them all up into one big monster of talent. I’m kind of pissed I haven’t heard of them ‘til now. I’m of course talking about Atlanta’s own, The Booze with their latest release At Maximum Volume.
“Borderline” opens with vintage-style church organ, followed by a very smooth and steady groove. You can definitely hear the Jagger swagger in the vocals. Though it’s most noticeable on “Rachel”.
“Devil to Pay” is my personal favorite. It’s edgy as hell (no pun intended). Listening with headphones, there are different guitar riffs playing in each ear, even throughout the verses. It’s a slow, hard, and noisy track. The harmonica solo was a very nice touch as well. The last words of the song are “Have Mercy” repeated four times.
TB’s style is definitely a nod to their Classic Rock predecessors. All the elements are there: heavy Blues influence, garage band distortion, electric guitars, occasional harmonica, and groove-based Rock tracks oozing with soul. Saying everything I’ve said is only to scratch at the surface of the band’s musical depth. There’s definitely something unique and special about TB. Their sound is refreshing, to say the least.
At Maximum Volume is an amazing album by an amazing band. I’m no psychic, but my prediction is that these boys have a long, long future ahead of them. Their sound has legendary written all over it. As far as I’m concerned, The Booze is the band to follow. At least for the moment–this is the music industry, after all.
